Although most of my work has involved snakes, my students and I also work with scorpions, spiders, and centipedes. Having explored questions of venom use and venom composition of scorpions, searching for glowing scorpions at night in the desert has become too much fun! I’ve also found them to be fairly abundant on several islands in the Bahamas, where I’ve examined their habitat preferences. I’m also exploring the distribution of medically important Arizona Bark Scorpions along the Colorado River, where their natural occurrence remains poorly understood. Because the Bark Scorpions are often introduced to residential areas via landscaping materials, I’m documenting their potential to become invasive species. Mosquitoes meet the definition of “venomous,” and I have examined their nocturnal distribution and biting habits in relation to ecological features relevant to birds.
